Meet Tech Star - Derek Edmond, Dir. of SEM, KoMarketing Associates
Who are you and what do you do?
My name is Derek Edmond and I work as an online marketing consultant, specializing in search engine marketing (SEM) – which is in helping companies generate traffic, brand awareness, leads and revenue through visibility in search engines like Google and Yahoo.
Professionally, I’m the Director of SEM Strategies at KoMarketing Associates, specializing in B2B Online Marketing – SEO, PPC and Social Media. I also write about SEO & Social Media, specifically for small businesses & individuals exploring the opportunities for themselves.
What services/products do you offer?
KoMarketing Associates provides online marketing services for companies in a wide range of industries, but specializing in the B2B technology, software and industrial industries.
Our core competencies are search engine marketing and social media strategies.
That includes:
SEO – helping companies with visibility in the traditional results found in search engines like Google and Yahoo
PPC – managing companies strategies for advertising on search engines (the results labeled “Sponsored Listings” when you perform a search)
Social Media – traffic, brand building and communication through social media news and networking sites (Facebook, LinkedIn, Digg, etc)
Corporate Blogging – certainly part of social media but specific to the creation and implementation of a company blogging strategy
Who/where is your audience?
Our specialization is in working with B2B companies since our online marketing strategies focus beyond just website traffic and into the evaluation of visitor/lead quality throughout the entire sales cycle. My personal blog on SEO (see below) is more focused on how small businesses and individuals can leverage search engine optimization for their own business strategies.
What is the website?

Well-Funded or Bootstrapped?
Somewhere in the middle and hopefully on the right track towards “Well Funded”
Where do you see yourself in 5 years? 10 years?
In 5 years my goal is to help build KoMarketing Associates into a company with multiple channels of business serving an even more diverse client base. We’re extremely fortunate to have long standing relationships with a wide range of clients and happy to say 2009 is still looking up, even with the economic challenges ahead.
10 years from now it would be great to be back on Cape full-time and traveling less, spending more time with family and smaller entrepreneurial endeavors.
Where were you born - where do you live now?
I was born in Rochester, NY – met my wife in Raleigh, NC and we moved to Orleans in 2004 after living a couple years in the Greater Boston area. We currently travel back and forth between Orleans and Boston (and thankfully gas prices have subsided a bit, at least temporarily).
PC or Mac?
PC – but if Apple were to build the complete home entertainment unit that I’ve heard rumored, I may convert.
Where did you go to school?
I received my undergraduate degree from SUNY Buffalo and an MBA from Suffolk University (partially through the extended program at Cape Cod Community College).
What Social Networks are you on?
My most active networks right now are Twitter and LinkedIn but you can check out Cape Cod SEO under “Connect & Share” to network on a variety of other social media sites as well. I love networking and talking to others interested in online marketing, search and social media.
Greatest invention ever?
Google, of course! I don’t know where I would be right now without it
Person you believe has contributed most to the world of technology?
I guess it depends on the context. From an Internet perspective, I’d have to say Tim Berners-Lee. From a business perspective I’m leaning towards Henry Ford in modern times and Leonardo da Vinci overall.
Where have you traveled in your life?
I have never been out of North America and that is something I certainly want to change in the near future. I’ve traveled fairly extensively throughout the US and at least have had the opportunity to visit the Caribbean on a few occasions.
Why set up shop on Cape Cod?
It really depends on a person’s goals professionally and personally. The Cape has a lot to offer and the smaller community is fantastic, but it can be expensive and challenging for professionals to stay on Cape full time. If you love ocean and want to get away from some of the congestion in the Boston area, the Cape is a great alternative.
5 Websites you go to every day?
Google
Yahoo
Digg
Search Engine Land
Rotoworld (for fantasy sports information)
What’s on your iPod right now?
Daily Searchcast
A bunch of random music I spent way too much time getting into ITunes once long ago. I can’t say I use my iPod much these days though.
What is on your desktop/screensaver right now?
Just the default setting actually
You are on a deserted island - do you bring a laptop or book?
Laptop (I am an addict)
Phone call or text message?
Depends on the situation I suppose
Feel free to tell us anything else….?
I really wanted to write a thoughtful comment on the recent Cape Cod Focus post on Young Professionals, since I feel that it is a very important issue, but only saw the post after the discussions had died down. Since then, I subscribed to the feed, and hopefully will get alerted when topics and events about this in the near future. The bottom-line is that I really like the objectives of Cape Cod Focus and hope it endures.
In the meantime, if you have questions or concerns about SEO, Social Media or Online Marketing, send me a message and let me know! I love fielding questions, discussing the topics and getting a good blog post idea when time permits.
