Meet Tech Star – Paula Hersey, Chief Penguin, Penguin Digital Design

Who are you and what do you do?

I am Paula Hersey, Chief Penguin at Penguin Digital Design, LLC.  I own/manage a small web design & development company.  On good days I get to design websites and discover all I don’t know about Photoshop.

What services/products do you offer?

We offer Web design, development and Internet consulting for the small business, not for profit and community organizations with special emphasis on client education.  We offer anything from a basic websites, shopping carts and content management systems to even just recently customizing blogs.

Who/where is your audience?
Our audience consists mostly of local Cape Cod businesses and organizations, but it is the “world wide web” and we’ve done sites in Florida, California and even Ireland.

What is the website?
www.PenguinDigitalDesign.com
Just recently a PhotoBlog: www.ccscapes.blogspot.com

Well-Funded or Bootstrapped?

Bootstrapped and looking for investors!

Where do you see yourself in 5 years?  10 years?

5 years from now I would hope our customer base is returning for redesigns and updating their Internet presence.  Also hope to have our internship program for high school girls grow from our 2 interns to 10.

10 years
The company hopefully will be managed by said interns above, and I will be off doing what I really want to do…photographing Penguins all over the world.

Where were you born – where do you live now?

I was hatched in Western Massachusetts in a hamlet (think smaller than village) called Montgomery (think coon skin caps and fishing barefoot in a stream), growing up life was a lot like Huck Finn and Tom Sawyer.

Today, I live in da’Mills with my husband Dave and our three dogs- Aussies Jetties Beach and Nantucket Bridge and a Border Collie Wellfleet Oyster.

PC or Mac?

Both- the best of both worlds.

Where did you go to school?

The School of Life, couldn’t afford college.
Went to Holyoke Community College for 1 semester and dabbled in Liberal Arts and photo journalism, and then ran out of money.  I was fortunate to have incredible mentors through out my 15 year retail management career (Kmart/KayBee Toys) who taught me how to manage a company’s greatest asset- people.  Did you know I used to be called the “toy lady” and have a incredible collection of Star Trek action figures?

What Social Networks are you on?
I lurk in the Boston.com Sports forums and also Pownce, LinkedIn, DeviantArt and
Istockphoto.com and just recently created my Classmates.com profile and wouldn’t ya know I’m more popular today than I ever was in High School!

Greatest invention ever?

The SLR camera – the ability to capture natures astounding beauty for all of eternity.

Person you believe has contributed most to the world of technology?

Guglielmo Marconi (Inventor of the Radiotelegraph system)
Radiotelegraphy or wireless telegraphy transmits messages using radio. Telegraphy includes recent forms of data transmission such as fax, email, and computer networks in general.  Ergo, the reason I have a job!

Where have you traveled in your life?

All across the United States/Canada/Mexico (my Dad was in the military).  Nova Scotia and Arizona have to be the travel highlights, one beautiful vista after another.  Spent a week this summer in Kentucky – gave a whole new meaning to the term redneck!

Why set up shop on Cape Cod?
My husband is a true native born and raised here, and finds travel across the bridge traumatic.  Seriously, having grown up in a close knit community in Western MA, I find living and working on the Cape to be very comforting and supportive.  My morning and evening commute is filled with ocean views- kinda puts the day into perspective.

5 Websites you go to every day?

IGoogle (personalized)
Boston.com
Espn.com
CapeCodToday.com
IstockPhoto.com

What’s on your iPod right now?

Talking Heads, Lyle Lovett, Sting, Entrain, Morphine, Blues Traveler, Diana Krall, John Mayall, Joan Osborne, Paul Simon, Santana, Taj Mahal, Tower of Power, Steely Dan… I could go on as it is 4Gigs…

What is on your desktop/screensaver right now?
A photograph I took with my “little sister” of Chapin Beach at sunset.  Screen saver varies with slideshows of our dogs, or whatever was on the camera this week.

You are on a deserted island – do you bring a laptop or book?
Book- 101 Ways to Cook Fish

Phone call or text message?

Text messages to friends, phone call to Mom.

Feel free to tell us anything else….?

I can shoot a .22 rifle, clean the fish that I caught, and start a fire without matches.

Thank you for your time, Paula!

Paula is the best boss ever, not to mention the coolest big sister anyone could ask for. She has provided me with such an amazing opportunity to work at Penguin Digital Design and I am very thankful for that.
In the years I have been working with Paula, I have learned an incredible amount about web design and development.

Thanks for everything Paula! You’re awesome.

I work for one of the many small businesses here on the Cape. A few months back we decided to update our website and hired Penguin Digital Design. The results were transformational for our company. We have many customers who have been with us for years who have commented on the professional design and workings of the site. We have others who found us on the web and were motivated by the site to drop a line and contact us. I know we’re all told not to judge a book by it’s cover, having said that, no one wants to buy a boring book and if the cover stinks…need I say more?
Thanks to Paula and all the other Penguin’s, our cover rocks! (and the book’s not so bad either)

Wow, this is awesome to learn more about your livelihood! For others – I’m Paula’s husband, David’s, first cousin, born on the Cape as well, and torn away at a tender young age to the West Coast! We live on the Texas coast now, and I get to visit Dave & Paula every so often…
Hey, is that why y’all haven’t come out here to visit is because David can’t get across the bridge?! tee hee.
Paula – great website – I’ll be spreading your talents here in Houston and Austin, okay?
Love to y’all,
Linda,
Sara,
Henry,
