Cape Cod, Tech Stars - Written by Leslie Fishlock on Tuesday, October 7, 2008 10:08 - 2 Comments
Meet Tech Star – Tom Stalcup, Physicist/Entrepreneur, Upward Innovations Inc.
Who are you and what do you do?
My name is Tom Stalcup. I am a physicist and entrepreneur. Presently, I own and operate ‘Upward Innovations Inc.’.
What services/products do you offer?
Upward Innovations Inc. designs and sells remote monitoring systems and accompanying user accounts at our online data center. Our devices are Internet ready—just plug them in and your data is sent automatically to the data center, where it can be viewed and our device re-configured from any web browser.
Our devices operate world-wide on satellite, cell phone, and paging networks.
Who/where is your audience?
Our audience is world-wide and includes environmental scientists, geophysicists, farmers, green builders, and more. Any industry that needs to access remote data would likely be interested in our products.
What is the website?
For general information regarding our hardware, visit: http://UpwardInnovations.com .
For information on our data center and service plans, visit: https://DataGarrison.com .
Well-Funded or Bootstrapped?
We are moderately funded.
Where do you see yourself in 5 years? 10 years?
In five or ten years, Upward Innovations Inc. will continue to create products and services for the modern world, ever more reliant on instant connectivity.
Where were you born – where do you live now?
I was born in Falmouth, MA on Cape Cod and presently live in Sandwich (a short drive from Falmouth).
PC or Mac?
I prefer the Mac, but do purchase low-cost Dell laptops and install XP onto them. Vista was a nightmare for me, and I don’t plan to switch over to it in the foreseeable future.
Where did you go to school?
I went through the Falmouth Public School system and received my Physics training at the National High Magnetic Field Laboratory at Florida State University.
What Social Networks are you on?
I don’t belong to any social networks, but do write occasionally for:
http://CnnExposed.com
Greatest invention ever?
The Printing Press, as it brought the latest innovations to the masses, causing an explosion in the pace of inventions and our leap into the modern world.
Person you believe has contributed most to the world of technology?
Johann Gutenberg (inventor of the printing press). I didn’t remember his name, but Googled the printing press to find it.
Where have you traveled in your life?
I’ve been to Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands, Iran, Mexico, and France. Iran is a fascinating place with kind people and a rich culture.
Why set up shop on Cape Cod?
Cape Cod is the perfect place for a company like Upward Innovations Inc. We’re a short drive from Woods Hole, home of some of the brightest minds in environmental science.
5 Websites you go to every day?
Google, Google News, DataGarrison.com
What’s on your iPod right now?
Don’t have an iPod, still have a large stack of CD’s.
What is on your desktop/screensaver right now?
I think there’s a black screen with a Windows logo flashing around.
You are on a deserted island – do you bring a laptop or book?
If the laptop had Internet access, I’d bring that to set up a rescue. Otherwise the book may come in handy to build fires.
Phone call or text message?
Phone call.
Feel free to tell us anything else….?
I’d recommend that we all be aware of what, exactly, forms our beliefs and opinions. It wasn’t long ago that 70% of us thought Saddam was involved in the 9/11 attacks. That wasn’t true, but we allowed ourselves to be misled by our government and media.
So if you see similar poll numbers after another barrage of pre-war or foreign policy news coverage, or if you feel as though you’re being persuaded by feelings rather than facts, please go outside the US mainstream media world for the other side of the story.
