Meet Tech Star – Nate Welch, Web Developer, eCape, Inc.

Who are you and what do you do?

Nathan Welch, web developer at eCape, Inc. I make the client and house websites and make sure they stay running, do some server management, create and manage the paid advertisers on our websites and try to keep up with evolving technologies ;)

What services/products do you offer?

eCape, Inc. offers pretty much the whole package, from site creation/development and hosting to marketing and advertising.

Who/where is your audience?

Mostly locals who want to start with a basic presence on the web or businesses looking to promote themselves to the local market. Be they plumbers, resorts, florists or whatever! We get the occasional off-Cape advertiser who wants to market to our region as well.

What is the website?

Our company “portal” is http://www.ecape.com but we have a popular local website http://www.capecodtoday.com which people seem to like, our mainstay travel website http://www.capecodtravel.com as well as the wedding sites
 http://www.weddingsoncapecod.com http://www.gayweddingsoncapecod.com .  My personal website is http://www.natewelch.com though I confess I haven’t updated much lately.

Well-Funded or Bootstrapped?

A lot of our income comes from the advertisers on our websites which seems to cover our nut. It’s not really my area – I still get a paycheck every couple of weeks, so I guess we’re doing O.K.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years?  10 years?

I really have no idea – I can barely plan my weekends, let alone 5 years from now!

Where were you born – where do you live now?

I was born in Waltham, Massachusetts but consider Marlborough my home town (where our family moved soon after). I now live in a little house in Brewster, MA

PC or Mac?

I run Ubuntu Desktop Linux on my PC desktop and notebook – it runs great! Any self-respecting geek should run at least one computer on Linux ;-)

Where did you go to school?

I went to high school at Nauset High in North Eastham. I skipped a lot of days and wasn’t exactly a model student. I majored in Marketing in college at Southeastern Mass. University of Dartmouth.

What Social Networks are you on?

I only just joined Facebook to get a feel for it. I confess I don’t like it much as the relationships seem very cursory and Facebook is constantly asking me to install apps or recommend them to my “friends”. I guess I’m as much of a wallflower in cyberspace as I am in real life.

Greatest invention ever?

Well for mankind, I would definitely say “language” because the rest of it wouldn’t be possible without it. For me personally it’s a tie between the chili dog and the Playstation 3.

Person you believe has contributed most to the world of technology?

That’s a tough one, but I’ll have to go with Steve Wozniak. He sort of got the ball rolling with cheap, usable personal computers.

Where have you traveled in your life?

I haven’t and don’t travel much with respect to vacations. Though in my younger days I used to bounce around a bit to areas such as Pittsburgh, Southern California, Boston area. Been to Mexico and Florida a couple times.

Why set up shop on Cape Cod?

I’m just an employee and it was mostly serendipity at work that I came to arrive at eCape. I like the more laid-back atmosphere of the region though, and nothing beats the Cape when the sun is shining.

5 Websites you go to every day?

Digg, Ars Technica, Engadget, Slashdot, and our various servers & portals to maintain them.

What’s on your iPod right now?

Don’t have a iPod, but I do have several thousand MP3s which represent a wide variety of music – everything from Rap to Rockabilly to Country to Alternative. Lately I like to explore the Internet radio stations to find music I haven’t heard before.

What is on your desktop/screensaver right now?

At work, it’s an Aston Martin Vantage V8 – my “lottery” car. On the lappy and at home, just some nice design wallpaper that’s easy on the eyes.

You are on a deserted island – do you bring a laptop or book?

I don’t understand the question. The laptop is useless without wireless or power and I confess if I ever got around to reading the book, it would be only once. If my goal was to be rescued from this island or survive for an extended period, I would take whichever item could be salvaged into something useful… Maybe I could use the laptop glass somehow to start a fire, or the book pages for “t.p”?

Phone call or text message?

Phone call – and no, I don’t own a cell phone.

Feel free to tell us anything else….?

Bubba was my best good friend. And even I know that ain’t something you can find just around the corner.  And that’s all I have to say about that…

Thank you for your time, Nate!

I myself would have to choose the chili dog. Thanks for the interview Nate.
