Instant Depth of Field

Changing the focus of your image is easier than you thought with this simple depth of field trick.

1. Open the photo you want to apply the effect to. Duplicate the background layer by pressing Cmd/Ctrl-J or by dragging it to the new layer icon at the bottom of the layers palette.

2. Now blur the background copy layer so you can reveal part of the image in focus. Go to Filter > Blur > Gaussian Blur and enter a value from 6 for low resolution, 72 ppi images or up to 12 for high resolution, 300 ppi images.

3. To reveal the areas in focus, add a layer mask to the top layer (background copy)  and mask the foremost object to hide the blurred image. TIP: You can alter the amount of blurriness by lowering the layer opacity.
