Meet Tech Star Fred Hegg - President/Founder Hegg Marine Solutions
Who are you and what do you do?
Fred Hegg - the man, the myth, the legend. In all seriousness though, I am a McGyver of sorts in the Geophysical Ocean Industry. I am currently the President of Hegg Marine Solutions and I work with underwater acoustic imaging systems and other acoustic instrumentation.

Over 25 years
Where was the strangest place you ever had to travel to fix a sensor/survey the ocean?
It would be hard to name the strangest place, but some of the more interesting areas would include Aqaba, Jordon; Shetland Islands, and a little town in China where the Great Wall meets the ocean. The latest adventure landed me in Pohnpei, Micronesia. The plane had to stop four times to get there, three on islands most people have never heard of.
Where do you see yourself in 5 years? 10 years?
Hopefully still President of HMS It’s hard to say because the company is so young, but I envision a corporation that has grown based on supporting the customer with products and services they need by word of mouth and to continue having strong relationships with the industry professionals I currently deal with.
Where were you born - where do you live now?
Born in Wareham, MA, currently residing as Mill Billy (Marstons Mills, MA)
PC or Mac?
PC by default as most of the industry is designed towards PCs.
Where did you go to school?
Upper Cape Regional Technical and a variety of military training while in the USMC - “Oorah!”
I feel that if I hadn’t gone to UCRT I wouldn’t have run into the people I did and wouldn’t be where I am today.
What Social Networks are you on?
Greatest invention ever?
The transistor - the foundation of all current technology
Person you believe has contributed most to the world of technology?
Al Gore….just kidding. I’d say the many people at Bell Labs.
Where have you traveled in your life?
Maybe this question should say where haven’t I traveled?! That would be Antartica, Southern Africa, Northern Russia and the middle of the United States.
5 Websites you go to every day?
metacrawler.com
google.com
capecodonline.com
digikey.com
noaa.gov
What’s on your iPod right now?
Don’t own one
What is on your desktop/screensaver right now?
A 3-D design of my company’s logo
You are on a deserted island - do you bring a laptop or book?
SAS Survival Handbook: How to Survive in the Wild, in Any Climate, on Land or at Sea by John Lofty Wiseman
Phone call or text message?
I prefer the phone because I think some emotions can get lost in txt messaging.
Feel free to tell us anything else….?
I feel like I’m the product of what some might consider misfortunes. My father died when I was 14 and my mother moved out the house when I was 18, so I had to develop a set of skills that would help me survive and give it my best. During this time I ran into Bill Dalton from Datasonics of Cataumet, MA who gave me the opportunity to get involved in the ocean industry and I took it and ran with it, never looking back. I’m very thankful for that.

[...] Tech Star Fred Hegg Each Tuesday, we interview a high-profile member of Cape Cod’s tech community. This time, it was Fred Hegg of Hegg Marine Solutions. Fred answered our famous 19 questions and identifies the book he’d bring to a desert island: SAS Survival Handbook: How to Survive in the Wild, in Any Climate, on Land or at Sea by John Lofty Wiseman. Definitely a good choice. [...]
