Meet Tech Star – Sheryl Crowley, VP/CIO, Cape Cod Healthcare, Inc.

Who are you and what do you do?

My name is Sheryl Crowley and I’m the Vice President of Information Systems/CIO for  Cape Cod Healthcare, Inc. and mom to Becca (19 and a sophomore at Simmons College) and Matt (16 and a junior at Sandwich High School).

What services/products do you offer?

The canned answer is: “Cape Cod Healthcare is the Cape’s leading healthcare services provider. With more than 400 physicians and 4,600 employees, Cape Cod Healthcare has two acute care hospitals, the Cape’s largest home health services agency (VNA), skilled nursing and rehabilitation facilities, an assisted living facility and many health programs.”

I like our mission : “To coordinate and deliver the highest quality, accessible health services, which enhance the health of all Cape Cod residents and visitors.”

Who/where is your audience?

Everyone who is lucky enough to live on the Cape.  Oh yeah…we might take care of a tourist or two on occasion (90,000+ visits to our Emergency Departments each year).

What is the website?

www.capecodhealth.org and coming soon… www.myCapeCodHealth.org (watch for this in late July – it’s going to be a great way to stay connected to your physician and a place to store your personal health record).

Well-Funded or Bootstrapped?

Health care is a tough business.  We have been very fortunate to make significant investments in technology over the years and will continue to do so in the future.  This next year is going to be challenging but I think we’ll see an improvement after that.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years?  10 years?

In five years I hope that I am still with my great IT team at Cape Cod Healthcare.  By then we will have been able to make some incredible strides with technology in support of quality patient care.  In ten years, who knows?  My kids will be 26 and 29 by then so I could be anywhere.

Where were you born – where do you live now?

I was born in Manchester, CT but grew up in Vermont.  I live in East Sandwich.

PC or Mac?

We have two PCs and a Mac at home.  Of course I use a PC at work.  My daughter is the Mac lover.  She’s trying to convince me to buy one to replace our oldest desktop.

Where did you go to school?

Bryant College (now University) – BS in Business Administration in 1984.  Imagine that the first PC lab opened the year I graduated.  We did all of our programming classes on dumb terminals in COBOL.  At least I’m young enough not to have used punch cards!

Currently working on my Masters at Cambridge College.

What Social Networks are you on?

LinkedIn is really the only one I spend any time on.

Greatest invention ever?

The diaper genie.  Why didn’t they think of that until after I had kids?  I guess I can get one when I have grandchildren.

Person you believe has contributed most to the world of technology?

I have to go with Gordon Moore (co-founder of Intel).  Think about his prediction back in 1965 that the number of transistors on a chip would double every two years (Moore’s Law) and that Intel has kept that pace for the 40+ years since then.

Where have you traveled in your life?

I’ve been in 44 of the United States and a bunch of places in the Caribbean.  So many places are on my list but will probably have to wait until my kids get through college.

Why set up shop on Cape Cod?

I was recruited to work as Director of Information Systems in 1997 when Cape Cod Healthcare was formed.  I worked for Cape Cod Healthcare for four years, Infinium Software for three years, and Jordan Hospital for three years.  I’ve been fortunate to live here, have great jobs close to home all these years and have a great place to raise my kids.  Most importantly though, I moved here from Vermont because the winters are really long there.

5 Websites you go to every day?

www.google.com , www.boston.com/bostonglobe/ , www.capecodonline.com/cctimes, www.histalk.com, and of course www.capecodhealth.org

What’s on your iPod right now?

A little bit of everything.  Coldplay, Snow Patrol, Chris Brown (kids’ influence), Springsteen, REM, Keith Urban, Rascal Flatts, Sara McClachlan…

What is on your desktop/screensaver right now?

The Big Three.  I’ll keep the Celtics until the Red Sox win the World Series.

You are on a deserted island – do you bring a laptop or book?

Books.  As many as I can carry.

Phone call or text message?

Text message – is there any other way to communicate when you have teenagers?

Feel free to tell us anything else….?

I am fortunate to be able to return to Cape Cod Healthcare as the VP/CIO.  The organization does incredible work taking care of people all over Cape Cod.   I have the best IT team around.  They’re a great group and very committed to supporting the patient care provided by CCHC.  They’re also a lot of fun and I’m proud to work with them.

Thanks for your time, Sheryl!

Best boss I ever had. Sheryl is a natural leader. She intuitively understands how to manage a team of IT/IS professionals. She knows when to provide direction and when to give her people the freedom to be creative in their jobs.

She never looked over my shoulder or tried to micro-manage me during our time at Infinium. When I failed (admittedly, it happened once or twice) she didn’t yell or lose confidence in me. Instead, she helped me to work through the cause of the failure and then proceeded to give me new, challenging projects to show that I was still an important part of the team.

Maybe in some professions this isn’t all that impressive, but when you manage a bunch of cranky, spoiled, insecure (but with huge egos), socially-maladjusted, hygienically-challenged technology people, having a leader like Sheryl makes all the difference in the world.

I know that I would not be where I am professionally without her guidance, mentoring and support.

CCH is lucky to have her.

Mom,

I’m proud of everything you’ve accomplished and anyone would be lucky to work with you. You’re great at what you do…everyone says it!

All technology talk aside…you’re the best mom in the world.

Love ya!
