Meet Tech Star - Lori Melia, CPU Computers

Who are you and what do you do?

My name is Lori Melia and I have been in the computer field for 12 years.  For almost 5 years now I have owned and operated a store known as CPU Computers, (an acronym for Computers Performance and Upgrades.) You can find us at 331 Cotuit Road, Suite 34, Sandwich – 508-888-7998.

What services/ products do you offer?

Our services are not limited to just computer sales. Besides building every computer to personal specifications, we also repair; network and support many other brands of systems. As partners with Linksys, Microsoft and an Intel Authorized reseller we offer many reliable products. We are local and we stand behind every computer that we sell.

We offer the following services:
Onsite Repairs – Pick Up and Delivery
Custom Built Systems
Wired & Wireless Networks
Data Recovery
Virus & Spyware Removal
Upgrades
Parts & Accessories
Website Development
We Service all Desktops & Laptops

Who/Where is your audience?

Primarily our business is here on Cape Cod servicing small business, schools and homes from Plymouth to Provincetown and even as far away as Rhode Island and Dedham MA.  We provide service to anyone who comes through our doors from the first time computer buyer, to the large business that needs multiple systems as well as a network.

What is the website?

Our website is http://www.cpucapecod.com

Well-Funded or Bootstrapped?

Definitely bootstrapped. I developed this business what little I had to get it up and running.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years? 10 years?

I would love to see myself in five years maintain our successful business. In ten years I would like to have more employees in the service area to help with the overwhelming of service.

Where were you born- where do you live now?

I was born and raised in Rhode Island, In 1987 I moved to Cape Cod and now reside in Yarmouthport, MA

PC or Mac?

Once a PC user, always a PC user, I’m a long time user of PC.  I learned to use PC’s during the good ole’ DOS days.

What Social Networks are you on?

LinkedIn, Sandwich Chamber of Commerce, Geek Girls.

Greatest Invention ever?

The computer! What else. Where would we be with out them?  It changed my life dramatically. Cell Phones too.

Person you believe has contributed most to the world of technology?

There are so many out there that had made all things possible in the world of technology.  It is hard to put your finger on just one person who made it all possible.

Where have you traveled in your life?

I love to travel.  My husband and I have been fortunate enough to see many places.  The Caribbean has always been my favorite place to go; Jamaica, St. Marten, Aruba, Mexico.  We flew in a helicopter over the Grand Canyon and the Hover Dam and that were really amazing to see. Wouldn’t want to see it any other way, it was great.

Why set up shop on Cape Cod?

Cape Cod is in dire need of Technology. The Cape always seems to be behind the times and being the only store in the area that can offer that and to give something back to our community.

5 Websites you go to every day?

MSN, Google, mostly business related sites

What’s on your iPod right now?

I admit I’m a slacker! I don’t own an iPod.  How crazy is that for a Geek Girl.  I listen to my music on my Palm Treo, one less item to lug around.

What is on your desktop/screensaver right now?

A picture I took of an amazing sunrise over the Gulf of Mexico.

You are on deserted island- do you bring a laptop or book?

As much as I would like to bring my laptop, my battery would die out on me in a few hours and render useless. As practical as I am I would bring the book read it a few thousand times then burn it so I could have fire for food and warmth.

Phone call or text message?

The geek in me likes to get the word out in a quick text message or e-mail.  Sometimes you just have to pick up the phone.

Thanks, Lori!
