DesignFTP: FTP for your clients without the FTP client
I don’t want to use this article to promote my business or services. That just wouldn’t be right. But I’m going write a brief post about a helpful service we just released in private beta form that I think will help out many business people who work with large files and their clients. I promise not to give you any sales pitch or promotion and just give you the facts of what we created, why we created it and let you try it out and decide if it’s good or not.
DesignFTP is a new service for designers, web developers, architects, printers, or anyone that requires clients to transfer large files to them. Through the years, we have found that clients only know about email as a way to send files. Email is only meant to handle small files and not huge data or photo files that are 5MB or larger. Anything larger than 5MB should really be transferred via FTP.
Most clients don’t realize what File Transfer Protocol is, nor do they have an FTP program on their computer, which is a huge problem many times. This is why we created DesignFTP. It allows us to add an upload form to our website very easily so clients can get the large files to us without having to know FTP. The client goes to our website clicks the choose file button, chooses the file from their local machine via the file manager. Once one or more files have been chosen the client clicks the upload button and the files go right to the FTP server. We end up getting an email notification so we know about the file.
There are a few more helpful features within the DesignFTP interface, like file logging and a 2 week file backup service. DesignFTP also allows you to add more than one FTP site. Right now it is in private beta, so you have to sign up for an account to get an invitation code to try it out. There is also a screencast on the home page to explain how the service works.
So, please sign up to try it out and help us by posting comments on what you think about the service, how it could be improved or what you would like to see.

Either url should work http://www.designftp.com and beta.designftp.com. If it isn’t working for you let me know.
Thanks.

Fantastic idea, and definitely a much-needed app. I always wonder whether some clients will fathom how to use FTP. I’ll be checking this out.
