Review: Dropbox
Dropbox is a nice little application and service that allows you to store and share files. It seamlessly integrates with your file system and appears as a folder which you can drag and drop files into. The files act as if they are on your local machine but really they are being stored on a server. I know what you are thinking. Just what I need! Another file sharing application!
Well, this one is a bit different. All your files are version controlled and and can be recovered at any time using the online web interface. Don’t have your own computer but need a file? No problem, Dropbox allows you to login online and download or manage your files right from the website wherever you are. Pretty neat, huh?
The really really cool part is if you need to share files with friends, family, or co-workers. You simply invite your friend by adding their email address in the “Share” section of the site. They will then be able to share files with you by dropping files into the same folder. If you have Growl on your Mac installed, you will see a small notification when something is dropped into the folder. Do you have a small team at work that normally emails files back and forth all day? This is perfect for you! You can invite and share a folder with multiple people. It’s all so simple and seamless. And if one of your team members happens to delete a file, no problem! You can simply roll back the file!
There is a small application that you can download which createdsthe folders on your machine. There is nothing confusing when you start up or sign in, it just runs in the background and you never know it’s even there. This is what makes Dropbox so great. It is so simple and easy to use, yet it is a very complex problem that we all have.
It’s an ingenious and versatile application developed by a couple of MIT students that became a YCombinator startup. They just released a new version of the beta app and are working on some cool new hush hush features. Currently you are allowed 2GB of storage. I can definitely see this becoming the business model where they would charge for more space and added features. If you think about it the possibility of running a small de-centralized business off of Dropbox with employees all around the world, it becomes even more interesting. There could be the possibility of not needing a local file server. I’m just saying.
I have 10 invites if anyone is interested. Comment here or Direct message me via Twitter or Pownce for an invite.

I use it to sync my two computers and it works great. If they would just offer more disk space it would be great and I would get rid of my file server. It works really well with our small team.

Gilbert, Just sent you an invite. Enjoy.
Dropbox seems like the perfect answer for my small business. If you have any invites I would love to try it out.

Chris
great write-up! I’ve been using DropBox for about 10 days and like its simplicity.
I haven’t figured out exactly how I’m going to use it (I already use FolderShare to sync files among my computers & Google Docs for basic collaboration with others), but I know that it will somehow fit into my daily work. It just seems to be one of those apps that’s too good to not use
