Meet Tech Star - Julie Brooks, CEO of eCape, Inc.

Who are you and what do you do?

Juie Brooks, CEO of eCape, Inc. That’s my paid job; my volunteer work is raising my two kids, Will age 9, and Marina, age 7 ;)

What services/products do you offer?

eCape is a website design and Internet marketing company. We operate and sell advertising on CapeCodToday.com, CapeCodTravel.com, and WeddingsonCapeCod.com. We build websites for local companies and also provide email marketing services.

Who/where is your audience?

Brides (and their mothers) on and off-Cape, year-round residents and second home owners; anyone who want to vacation on Cape Cod.

What is the website?

http://www.ecape.com

Well-Funded or Bootstrapped?

eCape is well-funded by its customers, which I guess means bootstrapped.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years? 10 years?

5 years: still running eCape, which will have double or triple the customer base, and three more large websites to sell advertising on.

10 years: Doing something that doesn’t make any money, like running an organic beet farm or sailing with my husband around the Caribbean or the Med.

Where were you born - where do you live now?

Born in Kansas City, Missouri, raised there and Chattanooga, Tennessee

now live in Brewster, MA

PC or Mac?

PC. Macs are too pretty to touch.

Where did you go to school?

Went to a girls’ prep school in Chattanooga, then Boston University (degree in Art History), then Syracuse (Master’s degree in Art History) –go figure.

What Social Networks are you on?

Facebook, MySpace, LinkedIn

Greatest invention ever?

Birth control, all forms

Person you believe has contributed most to the world of technology?

John Doerr, a Silcon Valley venture capitalist who invested in Google, Amazon, and many other successful Internet ventures. A real rainmaker.

Where have you traveled in your life?

I’ve lived in France and London, traveled all over Europe, including Greece, traveled some in the US, my favorite vacation spot is Exuma,in the Bahamas.

Why set up shop on Cape Cod?

It’s beautiful, a great place to raise kids, and full of interesting people who make great friends, co-workers, and employees. You have to be somewhat gutsy, scrappy, and creative to survive down here– there is no room for gray flannel suits.

5 Websites you go to every day?

CapeCodToday.com (of course!), Fark.com, WallStreetJournal.com, Perezhilton.com, Truemomconfessions.com

What’s on your iPod right now?

Don’t have one, I am embarrassed to admit. Sirius Satellite radio keeps me happy in the car. If I did have one, it would be packed with songs from the 70’s, 80’s and 90’s and ambient electronic stuff.

What is on your desktop/screensaver right now?

Home: A picture of me swimming in the surf off Stocking Island, Exuma, Bahamas.

Work: A picture of my kids posing like the couple in America Gothic in front of a sunset at Paines Creek Beach, Brewster. (No pics of me swimming at work–wouldn’t want to scare off the customers;)

You are on a deserted island - do you bring a laptop or book?

It would have to be a laptop so I could finally get some writing done for once in my life.

Phone call or text message?

Phone

Feel free to tell us anything else….?

I am thrilled to be able to start attending the Tech Council breakfasts, which I have blown off for 10 years waiting for my kids to be able to get ready for school without driving Dad bonkers. I am looking forward to meeting all the members of the Tech Council and participating in upcoming Geek Girl events.
