The Vesper Martini – Who is the Best James Bond?

If you are a James Bond fan like I, and especially a Casino Royale and Danel Craig fan, then you will remember this martini in the movie. I didn’t remember all the ingredients so I had to look them up. Granted, I was staring at Daniel Craig’s “perfectly formed ass” at the time, and through much of the movie. Just like Vesper herself. No, I am not a sexist. I am just an admirer of fine…pieces..of art and other things…
James Bond is without a doubt one of cinema’s most enduring characters. From villains like Goldfinger, Odd Job, and Dr. No, and beautiful Bond Girls such as Mary Goodnight, Holly Goodhead and Pussy Galore. James Bond is an icon.
The Vesper Martini is the first martini James Bond ordered in Casino Royale. The Kina Lillet Bond speaks of can be found today labeled as White or Blanc Lillet. It’s a brand of dry vermouth made in France since the late 1800’s that is often referred to as “the apèritif of Bordeaux”. Bond’s glassware of choice for the Vesper is a deep Champagne goblet. But of course.
Which brings me to the survey:
Who is the best James Bond ever?
Here are the actors who have played James Bond, starting from the first to the most recent:
1.) Sean Connery – Dr. No, From Russia with Love, Goldfinger, Thunderball, You Only Live Twice, Diamonds are Forever
Scotland Forever and so shall Sean Connery. He was my all-time favorite – until Daniel Craig.
2.) George Lazenby – On Her Majesty’s Secret Service
George who? What a stiff. I’ve seen planks of 2×4’s that were more pliable. Hence, his foray into James Bond ended at “1″.
3.) Roger Moore – Live and Let Die, The Man with the Golden Gun, The Spy Who Loved Me, Moonraker, For Your Eyes Only, Octopussy, View to a Kill
Less wooden then George, but definitely not as manly as Sean. To prove my point, last movie I saw him in was on a gay cruise in Boat Trip. Say no more.
4.) Timothy Dalton – The Living Daylights, Licence to Kill
Not even his charming Welsh accent could help Timothy Dalton. Or his bad acting.
5.) Pierce Brosnan – GoldenEye, Tomorrow Never Dies, The World is Not Enough, Die Another Day
Better actor than most, however I kept thinking of Remington Steele. Best movie he was in was The Matador, not a James Bond movie.
6.) Daniel Craig – Casino Royale, Quantum of Solace (in production)
Woweeeeee! Did you see him come out of the water in those tight bathing trucks? I thought I heard angels singing…
So cast your ballot for the Best James Bond Ever and relax with the
Vesper…Got it?
INGREDIENTS:
- 3 measures of Gordon’s Gin
- 1 measure of vodka
- 1/2 measure Kina Lillet
- lemon peel for garnish
The Vesper according to 007 author Ian Fleming and James Bond is as follows in Chapter 7 of Casino Royale:
“Three measures of Gordon’s, one of vodka, half a measure of Kina Lillet. Shake it very well until it’s ice-cold, then add a large thin slice of lemon peel. Got it?”

Sean Connery had a good run as holding the “best Bond” title until Daniel Craig. Craig has that bad-ass factor but also a wee bit of vulnerability that makes him even more endearing to women who want to “fix” men
Bert Jackson
Craig has the advantage of building on the Bonds who came before. His character seems the most real. He is flawed, vicious at times and vulnerable. We started to see this with the last Brosnan outing. I never cared for the silliness of the Moore series, though Roger was the perfect foil. And so much of picking the best Bond has to do with the best Bond movies. If Connery had done Living Daylights and License to Kill, would we think so highly of him? So my list…
Craig- most believable, plus he’s new blood
Connery
Brosnan (pick a different day and 2 & 3 might be reversed)
Moore
Dalton
Niven (Casino Royale v1 – remember?)
Lazenwho?
Tied: Connery and Craig
Can’t wait for Bond movie coming up soon.
I think Bert has provided the perfect commentary on the way that I view the Bond role.
Craig is #1 in my book, and since this is a different day from yesterday, I’m going to give #2 to Brosnan and #3 to Connery/ : )

The likes of Moore, lazenby, dalton, Brosnan and craig all played Bond, where as Sean Connery IS James Bond.
Steve MacIntyre
Lazenby was stiff? I suppose that’s the conventional wisdom. But it’s wrong. People think this because they haven’t seen “On Her Majesty’s Secret Service”, and figure, “well, if he did just one, how good could he be?” Well, he was great. And so was the Bond movie he starred in. And that’s not just my opinion. A sampling of reviews:
- “Any Bond fan will tell you this is the best film in the series. It’s my all-time favorite movie.” Northwest Journal
- “Might have been the best Bond” San Francisco Examiner.
- “Best of the Bonds” Mountain Express
And so forth. Salon.com got it right, noting, “Lazenby had a thankless task, stepping into a role that was defined by one of the most charismatic actors in the history of movies…. But it makes sense to have a new face here…”
Anyway, Lazenby was most excellent, and the reason he made just the one Bond movie is that, astonishingly, he figured the Bond franchise was tapped-out. Years later he said, essentially, “I should have made a second Bond movie because that would have led to making five or six.”
So here’s how I rank ‘em: Connery was best. Lazenby and Craig tie for second/third. Brosnan is fourth, Dalton is fifth, and Moore is sixth. Moore was good in “The Saint” though.
Steve MacIntyre
I forgot to note above: Lazenby wasn’t fired. He foolishly walked away from the role. Oh well. We all make mistakes. No pity for the guy, though, because he’s a gazilionaire who owns private estates all over the world.

the best and the real james bons is ¨SEAN CONNERY¨
1 SEAN CONNERY : the best and the real james bond
2 PIERCE BROSNAN : the second best james bond
3 ROGER MOORE : the very good bond
4 TIMOTHY DALTON
5 GEORGE LAZENBY
6 DANIEL CRAIG : IS UGLYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY NOT BOND
Flo
Ryan, thank you! I totally agree: Roger Moore – no one else
Homeboy
Connery at this point, though Craig may eventually pass him. Steve MacIntyre above has it absolutely right about Lazenby and OHMSS. The most underrated Bond movie of all time.
Lordavid
I have seen all the bond films and read all the books, you can say im a big bond fan, but a normal person would have said Connery is the best bond and i gotta say he is a really great bond, he has that tough but also has that smooth attitude and can easily play the role of bond, Lazenby was very looked down at but he was a good bond, Moore came in and he also had the same look to him which was fantastic. but then Dalton and Brosnan came in and they did not have a tough look at all there more like just the smooth bonds that can talk their way out of things and not back it up, they were good bonds but they had their flaws, and not to mention Brosnan last movie Die Another Day……Horrible movie. Now Daniel Craig came in for Casino Royale, and i was impressed cause not only was the movei in my opinion the greatest bond movie out there (second is Goldfinger: Sean Connery) but Craig did a fantastic job and in my opinion is by far the best bond out there so far, now for those who haven’t seen Quantum Of Solace yet, Craig was again the top bond cause of his performance but the story wasn’t as great as Casino Royale but none the less it was a good movie and Daniel Craig is still the best bond out there.
Matt
I totally agree with you lordavid, Craig is by far the best bond!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
i was so disappointed with the quantum of solace. james bond is a SPY not an ASSASSIN. a spy is getting information and escaping the enemy. a spy never capture an enemy, there is an agent for that.
james bond in quantum of solace is not a espionage movie but an assassin movie. why did the production staff make a copy of the bourne trilogy?
Berk
Roger Moore & Sean tie first place – then comes Daniel Craig. As for the rest – A total abortion……..

Opinions will vary based on what people want in their spy movie. I want realism – or at least enough to make me believe that it might really happen. And I don’t want corny one-liners, mugging directly into the camera, or bad special effects in front of a green screen.
Therefore, this is what I think:
8. Pierce Brosnan – My twelve year old niece could beat this guy up. The only way he works for British secret service is if they are trying to infiltrate Chippendales.
7. David Niven – He has the advantage over Brosnan in that he is trying to be funny.
6. Roger Moore – While he had a couple of decent turns(most notably in For Your Eyes Only), he also delivered the most offensive, putrid nonsense, too. I cannot forgive him for Moonraker or a View to a Kill. Even Octopussy, which I almost like, suffers from his creaky, stiff, prissy body and the agespot covered turkey neck. My grandmother was tougher. And those horrible jokes and smirks for the camera – don’t get me started.
5. Mike Myers (as Austin Powers) – It is odd that this character is not only tougher than the Bond of Moore or Brosnan, but also more sincere and more likeable. And he is the only one who really looks like an Englishman.
I’m kidding.
4. George Lazenby – George has an enormous face. That does not mean he was bad, but the three things I remember the most about his movie are horrible special effects, the puffy shirt, and his giant face. He is a solid actor, but rather average as Bond.
———————————————————————–
Now we get to the good stuff.
3. Timothy Dalton – I know this won’t be a popular pick, but I want a serious Bond who looks like he might really pull the trigger. Dalton was smart, tough, and serious. I thought he was great. The Living Daylights is one of the five best Bond films ever made.
2. Daniel Craig – I think that someday, I may consider him the best Bond, but I’ve only seen him in Casino Royale. One film is not enough to earn him the crown, though it is a fabulous film. Craig looks tough. I have no problem believing in his stunts or his willingness to kill the targets. That he is an outstanding actor just makes it all the better. He is believable in every aspect and is the ultimate modern James Bond.
1. Sean Connery – Sean has the advantage of having created the movie James Bond. He is the measuring stick, so the survey is going to be slanted in his favor. That said, he has all of the qualities that one would want in James Bond. He is good-looking, athletic, powerful, and he can pull off the dark suit. A must in the late fifties, sixties Bond world. In addition, he comes across as both smart and playful. Finally, while he plays Bond as confident, he certainly doesn’t have that sense of invincibility that we see in later movies.
He stars in two of the three best Bond films – Dr. No and From Russia with Love. His later films begin to move toward camp and I am glad he got out when he did. In the end, he is the ultimate old-school Bond. Your father’s James Bond, so to speak.
python
Now i know not everyone will like my list in fact a lot of you may hate where my choices are
But read my list and reply
6. Pierce Brosnan – Now honestly i don’t see how he is a good bond, his films were boring, slow, the villains weren’t good villains and he was trying act a part he just wasn’t right for. Ewan mcgregor would of been better.
5.Roger Moore – Now Moore was a good bond, he looked right and had the acting skills BUT he was the funny bond and at the end of the day bond is mainly about action and being a secret agent. im not saying the humor is bad but Moore used a bit too much, also he was 59 or so in A View To A kill, a bit too old really.
4. Daniel Craig – Again a good bond,Craig does show bond to be a real person not just an agent with his fights and shows bond has personal feelings BUT He is too scruffy looking, his hair never looks tidy and he is blond which kind of doesn’t work but still better than brosnan.
3. George Lazenby – Lazenby was a brilliant bond,The fact that he had little acting experience and step up and play bond was a brave move.Lazenby was also a more serious bond in the fact that he gets married at the end shows him to be more than just a secret agent.he had the right tools for James bond,i just wish he did the other bond films he was originally contracted for.
2. Sean Connery – The first ever bond, Connery played the part very very well, could be number 1 on this list BUT It seemed like all the gadgetry and spectacle were more important than him and he rarely smiled at the girl, don’t know why and also Connery was not the first choice for the part. the first choice for the part was Cary grant. Still he was close to number 1 on this list, that does count for something.
1. Timothy Dalton – Now Dalton is the ultimate bond, As well as having everything that a bond actor needs he was the one who gave bond his tougher darker more serious edge that brosnan and Craig use. The Living Daylights had the best theme song, best car chase, basically it had it all.But Dalton really showed he was a good bond in License To Kill. He walked out of mi6 to take revenge on what the villains had done to his friends, Dalton really showed bond to have a secret mean side and showed him to be real and have personal feelings towards his friends. He also gave that feeling that he would pull the trigger on any bad person involved. The best bond ever
D. Borges
Being somewhat of a James Bond snob:-) and having read all of the original Fleming Bond stories, Connery is still da man! The perfect blend of wit, charm, ruthlessness and raw machismo. Timothy Dalton I think by far the most under-rated actor to play Bond. I consider him the literary Bond, as he played the character EXACTLY the way Fleming wrote him. Unfortunately he was saddled with 2 highly under-publicized and not very well received films.
Craig was ok in Casino Royal (which I think overall was a pretty good film) he’s certainly got the thuggish nature of Bond down pat, but certainly not the urbane charming nature of the character. I think with Craig the producers are trying too hard to make a Jason Bourne-like character for the 21st Century. This doesn’t work with Bond. At heart he’s an imperialist, male-chauvinist, free-thinking, servant of her Majesty’s secret Service, and I would never want him to change. He’s best fighting Cold-war villains bent on world domination, in a by-gone era of cloak and daggers.
IMHO – Clive Owen would have been perfect as Bond – say in a story set in the early 60’s.

THE BEST JAMES BOND OF ALL TIME IS PIERCE BROSNAN AND THE SECOND BEST IS ROGER MOORE I MEAN THEY ARE THE ONLY TWO WHO ACTUALLY LOOK LIKE SECERET AGENTS AND THEY ARE ALSO THE ONLY ONES WHO CAN DO THE ROLE OF LADIES MAN PERSUASIVE PERSON AND SECERET AGENT WHICH IS WHAT JAMES BOND IS ABOUT
Henrik Augustsson
I’ve been a Bond-fan since I was born, I’ve seen all the films and started reading the books a year ago. My opinion in this is that during the times of the old Bonds, the rules of conduct were different, such as drinking the propper drinks, dressing correctly, charm and grace were viewed upon in a different light. Nowadays the rules have changed and Daniel Craigs Bond is a more believable and modern one, who follows the rules of conduct as they are today, and is therefor very hard to compare to the other Bonds.
James Bond, is not really a spy, as some say, he’s a secret agent, who may be called upon to take care of certain things when needed. He kills, he assassinates, he spies, he tortures, he guards, infiltrates, seduces, steals. No task is strange to him. I feel that Daniel Craigs Bond is the one that feels more able to do all these things, and doesn’t hold back. The only other Bonds I feel would do this is Sean Connery and Timothy Dalton.
Timothy Daltons Bond is highly underrated, IMO. He’s charming, yet rough when he needs to, and he feels no remorse for killing. He’ll stop at nothing. Then again, I think why he’s disliked is because he doesn’t have many opportunities to show that charm everyone likes in the other Bonds.
My answer to who’s best:
Daniel Craig – Believable and feels rough around the edges, as he should in Bonds early days.
Sean Connery – Cunning, Charming and has that air of danger around him.
Roger Moore – Simply a great Bond, yet almost too emphasized on the charm.
Timothy Dalton – He’s a realistic Bond, but the others outclass him, different times, different views.
The rest falls on last place for being crap, all of them…

The best actor 007
There are many actors who have been acted James
Bond in James Bond 007 movies. In my opinion, Roger More is
the best actor for James Bond 007 movies. Firstly he has performed
James Bond role for 7 times. Secondly, the movie that he had
performed gain more money than others’. Especially,
“A view to A kill”, that his last series before he wants to say
Goodbye, gained 150 millions ago. In conclusion Roger More is
the best actor for James Bond because James Bond 007 movies
that ,he had performed Bond have a complete action than others’.
What do you think about favorite Bond?

Tis difficult to say cos they always try to match Bond with the era…I think the series owes alot to Roger Moore…they were dead on their heels begging Connery to come back….People ramble on about Moore not being hard enough or too humorous, but if he hadn’t played a contrast – i.e if he’d imitated Connery’s Bond, the series would have been over…lazenby tried to imitate Connery and i know some ppl like O.H.M.S.S but it really was just an inch away from being a very poor soft-core porn flick…plus you have to consider Moore is 3 yrs older than Connery, and Connery was considered too old!!!! That said they all bring something to the role…Moore intentionally gave it escapism which is what entertainment is all about…otherwise why even bother goin to the cinema??
Moore gets my vote followed closely by Connery and… who else is there?!?
Lazenby didnt do one film cos he was bad. He turned down a multi-picture deal because his agent at the time convinced him Bond wouldnt last into the 70s. And Dalton is one of the finest Shakespearean actors the UK has produced. Do your bloody research.

Whatever you say, sir, nobody, I repeat, nobody, can beat Sean Connery in the Bond role. He was cut out for that role.

Hands down
the best of the best of the best of the best of the best……………………………………………..IS
Sean Connery because he is awsome, and there is nothing that compares to the original, and with the graphics and cameras at his time, he did a pretty good job,
and i like Daniel Craig but if he used the same movie effects as Sean did, he would suck
but i like all the Bond movies. PERIOD.
Filip
In my opinion the best bond was Pierce Brosnan. He was a perfect blend of Connery’s tough-guy-ness and Moore’s humor plus charm. My favorite moovie with him would be “World is not Enough”. The other three wwere not so good, although the actor played his roll FANTASTIC.
Second place – Connery, Third -Craig (he coulkd be a little better looking – check out his ears! what a lough); fourth Lazendby; and as for Moore and Dalton – never really liked them as James Bond.
[...] For the fans, who is your favorite James Bond? [...]
in my opinion, the best Bond is Sean Connery followed closely by Roger Moore. The rest are all bystanders. As for Craig, he never should have started in the first place- he is soooooooooooo unbondlike period!
The best is Roger Moore, but second is Pierce Brosman
But the worst is Daniel Craig! He has blond hair!
