Meet Tech Star - Bob Curtis, CEO of the Regional Technology Development Corp. of Cape Cod

Who are you and what do you do?

I am Bob Curtis and I am the CEO of the Regional Technology Development Corporation of Cape Cod (RTDC).

What services/products do you offer?

RTDC is an non-profit economic initiative established to focus on creating new jobs and diversifying the employment base on Cape Cod. The goal is to apply new technology being generated on Cape Cod-particularly that from the various Woods Hole research institutions.

We primarily work with the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution and the Marine Biology Laboratory but also try to help local entrepreneurs with strategic management input. RTDC’s role is to help commercialize appropriate technology either through the starting of new entrepreneurial companies, assisting existing development stage companies with strategic initiatives or possibly recruiting companies to Cape Cod to leverage the local expertise and facilities in the marine, environmental, aquaculture, alternative energy and life sciences area.

Who/where is your audience?

Our “audience” are researchers, inventors and entrepreneurs primarily based on Cape Cod that are or want to develop new technology that will result in new job creation.

Well-Funded or Bootstrapped?

We are currently funded by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts and through a peer reviewed Regional Grant from the John Adams Innovation Institute which is part of the Massachusetts Technology Collaborative.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years? 10 years?

Ideally, as the CEO of the RTDC, a wildly successful organization that has been assisting in the creation of numerous new jobs on the Cape through its entrepreneurial activities.


Where were you born - where do you live now?

Born in Weymouth, MA and currently living in Mashpee.

Where did you go to school?

I started my college education in the UMass system in Amherst and after 2 years transferred to the Massachusetts College of Pharmacy in Boston where I graduated with a BS in Pharmacy. I subsequently went on to earn a Doctor of Pharmacy and completed a residency in Clinical Pharmacology at the University of Missouri. I later attended Columbia University and received an MBA.

N/A-not that I am anti-social!!!


Greatest invention ever?

The paperclip—elegantly simple and still widely used after all these years.


Person you believe has contributed most to the world of technology?

Watson and Crick—identified the first tools (DNA) to understand the process of life and disease.


Where have you traveled in your life?

Many places but have never been to Africa, Australia or India. Would like to go to all.


Why set up shop on Cape Cod?

Cape Cod has real undiscovered gems in Woods Hole. The research community there is internationally recognized as a mecca for marine/environmental/life sciences and what a beautiful location.
