The Hemingway Cocktail Martini
I was feeling in a rather depressed mood. Today. Earlier. As I was thinking of several things ways to drink. The martini. And then it came to me in a dream. Slowly. My thirst was undeniably parched. Grasping. For liquidity.
I just finished watching the last bullfight. Goring. Bloody. The bull was defiant, the crowd restless. Pilar was sad. Like me. For a cocktail. But not just any cocktail. The perfect cocktail. The Hemingway Cocktail.
Okay, so I tried to pretend I was writing like Ernest Hemingway, getting myself in the mood. In drinking the Hemingway Cocktail, I tried to become Papa. I became addicted to minimalism. I drank. I became depressed. Chris had to remove any rifles, handguns and shotguns from the office…
Now granted, this is not the typical Hemingway Cocktail - it is changed a little and I have made it into a martini. It’s refreshing in the Spring - or perhaps for one of these cold ass Cape Cod May days. Global Warming, my ass. I have two penguins burning wood in my backyard fire pit trying to get warm.
Okay, so the picture above shows one. Sue me. At least I know that penguins are on the ANTARCTIC as opposed to the ARCTIC, unlike NBC. Shame on you, NBC. I was using STUFFED penguins, not stealing video from someone else. Kind of makes me think the Moon landing was fixed…but then again, any movie with O.J Simpson and James Brolin must be pretty fixed and …pathetic? Am I the only one who remembers Capricorn One? Thank God. I could only hope children born after after 1978 would have that totally expunged from their narrow-minded little minds…The ’70’s sucked, little children, but just not as much as the ’60’s. That was even worse….
But, I digress….
Here you go!
The Hemingway Cocktail Martini
3 ruby red grapefruit, plus 4 grapefruit slices
6 ounces vodka
Simple syrup, recipe follows
Sugar
Juice the grapefruits and divide the juice among 4 glasses. Add 1 1/2 ounces of vodka to each glass. Add desired amount of simple syrup to sweeten the drink. Stir well.
Dip the grapefruit slices in sugar, to coat. Place 1 sugar dipped grapefruit slice on the rim of each glass.
Don’t know how to make Simple Syrup? It’s, um well, simple…
Simple Syrup:
1 cup water
1 cup sugar
Combine the water and sugar in a saucepan over medium heat. Bring the water just to a boil and boil until the sugar dissolves, but the mixture does not get any color. Remove from the heat and let cool. Store in the refrigerator for up to 1 month.
