Quick and Easy Color Cast Correction
Note: This is a first in a weekly series on Fridays called “Photoshop Friday”. Here I will give quick hints and tips on getting the most out of Photoshop. Enjoy and feel free to leave a comment!
If you’ve ever had a great photo with a bad color cast here’s a fantastic step that’ll fix your problem.
Step 1: In the open document, duplicate the background layer.

Step 2: Go to Filter > Blur > Average. This will convert your image into a solid color based upon your original image. The sample is a muddy grey-brown color.

Step 3: Add an a curves adjustment layer. Choose the grey eyedropper (the one in the middle at the bottom of the curves dialogue box). Using the middle grey eyedropper, click within the solid color of your image. This will correct the color to a neutral grey. Click OK.

Step 4: Hide the duplicated layer by clicking on the eyeball in the layers palette. (It is to the left of the image thumbnail) The curves layer is now showing the color adjustment on your background (original) layer.

Step 5: Click the eyeball of the adjustment layer to show the before & after transformation!

Janel, this is great. I’m really looking forward to this column. Thanks.
Great tip, thanks Janel. I’ve been using Photoshop since, hmmm, version 2 I think, and I didn’t know about this technique.I don’t do a lot with photos, but this will come in handy I’m sure.
Now, how about the screencast version? ;-)
Does anyone else remember Photoshop before layers? Ow, makes my head hurt just to think of it. Oh yeah, no actions either. It was like writing on a cave wall with a charcoal stick.

Nice job! Photoshop is like music, there is always something new to learn. And yes, Jim, I remember Photoshop 2 before layers! Or how about before History? While away the hours making a complex layout. Crop to save a section of that layout for a web graphic. Then accidentally hit Save. Everything gone, including sanity. Yes, the world is now a better place.
Looking forward to next week!
Wow - she’s blonde and she’s wicket smaht.
Of course I kid.
Viva la Geek Girls!
Great job, Janel - welcome to the @Bar family!

Such flattery! Now I’ll have to make sure I have more of the same great tips. Hopefully the majority of @Bar readers will be able to pickup something new each week. For those that already know the tip of the week, consider yourself wicket smaht.
