Meet Tech Star - Brian Kasper, Bonsai Logic

Who are you and what do you do?
Brian Kasper. I am co-founder of Bonsai Logic, a software development and consulting firm on Cape.
What services/products do you offer?
We have developed a suite of off-the-shelf products used by local municipalities for things such as selling beach and vehicle stickers; issuing dog licenses and various other permits; managing utility accounts, fixed assets, etc. We offer consulting services to further customize each implementation. We also frequently consult for businesses that need to augment their development teams.
Who/where is your audience?
We are physically based on the Cape so most of our clients are local. However, we have a few national customers that we occasionally support.
What is the website?
www.bonsailogic.com and www.trackersuitesoftware.com
Well-Funded or Bootstrapped?
Very much bootstrapped. We struggled in the beginning to make a name for ourselves, but now that we have reached an even keel, we are happy to have not brought any investors in. It gives us more freedom to move in the directions we see fit.
Where do you see yourself in 5 years? 10 years?
In 5 years I see myself doing the same thing I am now – making software. In 10 years - hopefully the same but with more money in the pocket.
Where were you born - where do you live now?
Worcester, Massachusetts. I live in West Yarmouth now.
PC or Mac?
PC
Where did you go to school?
I went to school at WPI (Worcester Polytechnic Institute)
What Social Networks are you on?
I honestly don’t spend much time on the internet other than work-related research. But I do have a LinkedIn.com account.
Greatest invention ever?
The internet. What other thing has changed the face of business, education, communication and just about everything else so drastically and in such a short period of time as the internet?
Person you believe has contributed most to the world of technology?
Bill Gates. Microsoft creates some really nice software. But more importantly, they develop the tools to create it and basically give them away to developers like us for free. The hidden motivation may be to propagate Microsoft technologies, but it also does a good job of helping the world stay on the bleeding edge of technology. Create the best tools for the best developers so that way they can create the best software.
Where have you traveled in your life?
Not nearly as many places as I’d like. I’ve been to Italy and Switzerland once. I loved it and hope to visit Europe again soon.
Why set up shop on Cape Cod?
I love the Cape. I may need to work twice as hard to make half as much as I would in the city, but the quality of life is what’s important to me. To me it’s worth it.
5 Websites you go to every day?
Google.com, Microsoft.com, CodePlex.com, Asp.Net, Wunderground.com
What’s on your iPod right now?
Led Zeppelin
What is on your desktop/screensaver right now?
Wallpaper from SensitiveLight.com
You are on a deserted island - do you bring a laptop or book?
Book. There wouldn’t be any internet access or electric power on a deserted island. In just a few hours the laptop would be a useless paperweight. Whereas the book has many flammable pages in it, useful for getting fires started while waiting for a rescue ship.
Phone call or text message?
Text message. I always feel forced to make small talk on a regular phone call – even when I don’t have time or am not in the mood to chat. Whenever I need to get in touch with someone, it’s usually for a small tidbit of information. A text message lets me put that out a request and continue with other tasks while I wait for a response. Multi-tasking… yep, very nerdy.
Feel free to tell us anything else….?
Thank you for your time, Brian!

Sadly, I worked in W. Yarmouth for 2 years and didn’t know about Brian’s company.
Nice to know there are other MSFT developers close by … great profile.
