The Mai Tai Martini
I have booked my tickets to Hawaii for Miss T’s wedding, so I thought to celebrate the occasion, let’s all have Mai Tai Martinis!
Not now - I am writing this at 9:30am on Monday, but maybe perhaps at 5?
I have not done a rum drink and I know there are a lot of rum drinkers out there. I chose this one because I love mai tais, and I love martinis. They go together, like….they go together, like Chinese food and chocolate pudding…
I am very excited to go to Hawaii. I have never been. We are going to the big island, Kona, where my friend Bert at KOA Media likes to retreat to and put his toes in the sand, when he isn’t putting his toes in the sand on Cape Cod.It’s a little different, Kona and Cape Cod.
The beaches on Hawaii are free - on most Cape Cod beaches you have to be born into the lucky sperm club, or pay a hefty parking charge to your town municipality. But, on Cape Cod, we have Ted Kennedy sailing and John Kerry windsurfing with the locals! On Kona, they only have Don Ho and Jack Lord, and I think sadly, both are pushing daisies. On Kona, they have poi - Cape Cod they have tartar sauce. Can’t decide which is worse, though. So, it’s a tie.
Any trip to Hawaii, if you are coming from Boston, is an invigorating stop in San Francisco for a little Silicon Valley Stroll and perhaps some vino crawls in Sonoma or Napa. We have 3 days in San Fran, so methinks we are going to mosey on down to Cupertino and pay homage to my own personal Mecca - Apple. And maybe, just maybe, if I go to the local Whole Foods, I can cart-crash Stevie at the tofu counter. I can only wish!
Then off to Mountain View to Google and see if we can look really geeky and get invited to the cafeteria. I know what you are saying. The cafeteria? Have you ever SEEN the Google cafeteria? It’s like the Louvre of cafeterias.
But I digress…
Here is a recipe for the Mai Tai Martini - based on Dan Vincent’s recipe:
Mai Tai Martini
1 part Mount Gay Rum
1 part Meyer’s Dark Rum
Little French Garnier Orgeat - Almond flavored simple syrup
Little Orange Juice
Little Pineapple Juice
1 part Orange Curacao
Get a glass of ice. Pour a little Orgeat in it, a little pineapple and a little orange juice. Equal parts Orange Curacao and Mount Gay rum. Pour it off with some Meyer’s Dark Rum until glass is full. Shake and serve in martini glass.
