Entertainment and Media consumption, will we ever feel filled?
I’m not a big tv watcher probably about 3-4 hours a day mainly at night. I do enjoy a good movie and will watch about 3 a week. I don’t know about you but I sit watching my Comcast digital cable with On Demand thinking “there’s nothing on”. So with over 500 channels according to Comcast, I even have all the HD channels, I feel like I have either seen everything I want to see or what is on is just plain junk.
So, basically most of cable is just a library of old or past content with some new or live content thrown in to keep me coming back. I pay the cable company every month to view old content or at least content that I don’t want. I guess it’s not that I don’t want it as much as I feel empty as the amount of good or new content is outweighed by old tired rerun content. I also have a Netflix account which sends me 3 movies at a time, so when I’m bored with tv I have 3 movies to watch. I do enjoy the movies more as these are usually ones I have asked for. With the movies I still feel empty because I enjoy the films I receive but I usually only get to watch 2 or 3 a week. The other issue is the time it takes to dedicate to movies about 1.5 - 2 hours.
I also listen and watch many Podacasts as I work through the day. The podcasts are really taking over as the content is very original and new. It isn’t old and while there are a lot of tech podcasts which can sometimes feel like regurgitated content it still is great content. Quality isn’t always there but I start to feel entertained and content. Something that is needed are more local podcasts and short general news content. I think you will start to see this soon.
I’m starting to consider getting rid of my cable package or maybe moving down to basic cable and even stop the Netflix account and start using the Apple TV or a Mac Mini to subscribe to shows and movie I want to watch. Then use Hulu or other online services for tv shows not on iTunes and get the content I want. I think the big issue of feeling my media consumption void is the idea that I get what I want, when I want it. The cable and satellite companies try to sell you on this but it just doesn’t cut it. Apple TV, Media Center PC’s and Podcaster’s have some really great opportunities to change how we consume media and get our fill.
